As per Fabrizio Romano in the Guardian, Manchester City have joined rivals Chelsea and Liverpool in the race to sign Celta Vigo midfielder Gabri Veiga during this summer transfer window.
The young Spaniard has a release clause of £34.6m which can be activated by the club interested in signing him. He is on City’s shortlist after they lost Ilkay Gundogan to Barcelona this summer.
Chelsea, on the other hand, are set to begin negotiations with Brighton and Hove Albion for Moises Caicedo. They might face competition from Manchester United for the Ecuador international as the Red Devils have also begun talks.
The Blues have let go of a number of midfielders in the last few days. N’Golo Kante has gone to Al Ittihad, Mateo Kovacic is now a Manchester City player, Ruben Loftus-Cheek will play for AC Milan and we still do not know what happens with Mason Mount’s future this summer. So, we can see why they are in the race for midfielders.
Coming back to Veiga, he is a box-to-box midfielder who has predominantly played in a midfield pivot for Celta. He is someone who likes to make forward runs and help the team with goals and assists. The off the ball work isn’t bad as well.
In the 2022/23 season, the 21-year-old scored 11 goals and assisted four in 36 La Liga appearances. His performances were one of the main reasons why Celta avoided relegation by a comfortable margin.
While it might be difficult to compete with the attraction and might of City in the transfer market of the modern day, what Chelsea can do is be quicker with the Veiga approach and make sure they are in the advanced stages of signing him before the English and European champions come with an offer.
He is another young player that we could add to the team but it could lead some fans to start worrying about our approach of chasing young players that are still unproven at the highest level.
