A View From The Bridge

Chelsea star no closer to extending Stamford Bridge stay

Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy is no closer to signing a new contract

According to the Times (h/t Metro), Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy is nowhere near signing a new contract with the club after losing his spot to Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Mendy, whose contract at Stamford Bridge lasts until the summer of 2025 (Transfermarkt), rejected new contract terms in December, citing disrespect as the reason behind the offering of low wages.

The Senegal international has not played in 2023, after picking up an injury following his exploits in the World Cup. Graham Potter has anyway preferred to start Kepa in goal.

Mendy is now back in team training but may sit on the bench. He is not close to signing a new deal as he is doubtful about his future, with claims that Chelsea have not made his contract extension as their priority as of now.

As a matter of fact, Potter wants to get rid of both Mendy and Kepa and sign a new goalkeeper in the summer. The report suggests they are interested in Illan Meslier, David Raya and Robert Sanchez.

It remains to be seen what happens on this front after the end of this season. Mendy, 31, still has a few years left in him to ply his trade on the elite level.

Upon his arrival in 2020, he replaced Kepa and became one of the best goalkeepers in Europe for two seasons (2020/21 and 2021/22). Things did not start well this time around, and injuries have not helped the cause.

More Chelsea News:

If the former Rennes stopper is sold in the summer, he will be remembered for a memorable 20/21 season in the Champions League. His saves helped Chelsea lift that trophy in 2021 against all odds under the management of Thomas Tuchel.
