According to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano (h/t Football.London), Chelsea face an uphill task to convince Brighton and Hove Albion to sell midfielder Moises Caicedo.
The Blues are interested in signing the Ecuador international, either now or in the summer transfer window. CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs reported that the Seagulls have no intention to sell the player and only a higher fee will convince them to do otherwise.
The Athletic (subscription required) reported a few days that Brighton have rejected a £55m offer made by Chelsea to sign Caicedo. They think the price for a January sale is around £75m+.
After signing quite a few players in the January window, the Blues are now focusing on bolstering the midfield and right-back departments. The injury issues of Reece James and N’Golo Kante have played a big part in that plan.
Caicedo has had an excellent season for Brighton so far. He was very good for Ecuador during the World Cup as well. Along with Chelsea, Liverpool also has a keen interest in the player, but they think his price is over the top.
The 21-year-old is a versatile midfielder who can either play as a defensive midfielder, as a central midfielder or as a midfielder in a double-pivot. He is excellent on the ball, is press-resistant, works hard off it and has good ball progression capability.
With Jorginho likely to leave in the summer following the expiry of his contract and Kante’s injury woes not relenting, it would make a tonne of sense if Chelsea sign Caicedo sooner rather than later.
The Ecuadorian can add dynamism and balance to our midfield along with a high work rate and great coverage of the ground.
