Chelsea are linked with a summer move for Bayern Munich forward Serge Gnabry as the German ace enters the final year of his contract. According to Sky Germany (h/t football.london), Gnabry is close to agreeing to a new contract with Bayern, but if that falls through he is free to leave the club.
This will come as both good and bad news for Thomas Tuchel. If the German international signs a new contract, Chelsea could miss out on a very good player. If a deal is not struck, Gnabry might be available on the market at a cut price. It all depends on what the player chooses to do.
A former Arsenal winger, Gnabry joined Bayern from Bundesliga side Werder Bremen in 2017. After spending his first season on loan, the German has not looked back. He has gone from strength to strength every season and has now become a first XI regular for Die Roten.
The 27-year-old has been an integral part of the Bayern squad and played a key part last season as the club lifted their record 10th successive Bundesliga title. The German scored 14 goals and assisted six more in 34 league appearances for the Bavarian club last season.
Tuchel’s intent to improve his attacking options is no secret. Having already added Raheem Sterling to his ranks, the Chelsea boss could do with one more attacker. Gnabry would be a very good fit for the Blues as he can play anywhere along the frontline. A clinical finisher, he would be a dynamic addition to the Stamford Bridge outfit.
But the only problem is that the player is close to agreeing to a new deal that will keep him at the Allianz Arena beyond 2023. If he signs a new deal, it will become very tough for Tuchel to convince him to join the Blues and he will not come cheap either. Chelsea must be absolutely sure that they want Gnabry and then should go all out for him before it is too late.
If the player extends his contract then it will make no sense for Chelsea to go after him as he would have made his intentions clear. They would be wise to look for other alternatives rather than being stuck with him. A fine player, landing him would be a coup of sorts for Chelsea.
Though a contract extension has not been signed, it will be interesting to see what happens with the German. Chelsea still have the chance to swoop in for the player, but they must do so fast or risk the chance of losing him. Only time will tell where Gnabry will play next season.
