Chelsea are set to go up against Manchester United and compete for the signature of Frenkie de Jong. The Blues have made their interest known to Barcelona in the last few hours. The Stamford Bridge side are expected to launch an offer for the Dutch national, according to Relevo (h/t Mirror).
The Catalans are waiting for Chelsea to make a formal offer for De Jong. There has been speculation about the 25-year-old’s future in Barcelona over the summer. Our Premier League rivals from Manchester have been linked with the Dutch national all summer.
But De Jong doesn’t seem keen to leave the Blaugrana for the Red Devils. With no Champions League football at Old Trafford, attracting big names is difficult. The Blues have the pedigree of winning the highest European footballing honour just last year under Thomas Tuchel.
The Dutch national’s possible move to Stamford Bridge is an exciting prospect. We already have one of the best midfielders in the world in N’Golo Kante.
Mateo Kovacic has been a consistent player for us since signing from Real Madrid. The Croatian exudes calmness in the middle of the park. He also has the ability to score some outrageous goals.
Jorginho is another option for Tuchel to count on. But over the course of last season, it seemed the German didn’t trust the Italian to start. Fans are also rearing to Conor Gallagher in a blue shirt next season.
With other options in midfield lacking the quality needed and Kante’s contract expiring in a year’s time, a move for De Jong seems wise. The Dutchman is only 25 and has his career ahead of him.
There’s no doubt in the abilities that De Jong possesses. After breaking out at Ajax, Barcelona signed the talented midfielder. Over the years, he’s been a regular for the Catalans and the Netherlands national team.
A player of De Jong’s quality isn’t on the market that often. We should do everything to entice the 25-year-old to London.
