Chelsea have agreed £55 million deal with Spanish club Sevilla for Jules Kounde

Chelsea have agreed to a £55 million deal with Sevilla for centre-back Jules Kounde, according to The Sun (h/t Metro). After months of negotiations, a deal now finally looks close.

The Frenchman has also supposedly accepted personal terms with the Blues and is ready to undergo a medical in the next 48 hours. If the 23-year-old does end up signing for the Stamford Bridge side, it’ll be the second defender through the door after Kalidou Koulibaly.

Chelsea have been competing with Barcelona for the France international’s signature. But it looks like we’ve got one over the Catalan giants this time around.

Chelsea have agreed deal for Jules Kounde with Sevilla.

The Blues have been chasing Kounde for some time now. We have been after the Frenchman’s signature since last summer. With the departures of key members of last season’s squad, the Stamford Bridge side have been desperate.

A boost for our title hopes

Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen left the club at the end of the season as free agents. Cesar Azpilicueta has also made his feelings known, with a move to Barcelona on the 32-year-old’s mind.

This has left us with a shortage of quality and experienced defenders. Thiago Silva was the only genuine world-class defender in the side before the arrival of Koulibaly. The Brazilian turns 38 in September.

Trevoh Chalobah and Malang Sarr were the other two options for Tuchel to trust. But while the pair have several games under their belt for the first team, they still have a long way to go.

For Chelsea to challenge for titles, first and foremost, restoring quality in our defence was key. With the possible addition of Kounde, some semblance can be restored to the backline.

It remains to be seen whether we’re able to get the deal over the line. But if the Blues do manage to bring the 23-year-old to London, it’ll be a step forward in challenging the top two for the Premier League next season.
