According to Football.London, Chelsea are keen on securing a deal for Spanish centre-back Pau Torres from Villarreal this summer to help them sort out their defensive woes.
The Spaniard has been one of the best defenders in La Liga in the past few years and has time and again proved his quality in Unai Emery’s side. He was instrumental to Villarreal’s run to the Champions League semi-final this season and is a key cog of the Yellow Submarines rearguard.
The 25-year-old centre-back has played 47 times for Emery’s team this season scoring six goals and providing one assist across all competitions. Torres has a contract with the La Liga side until 2024 and if they want to secure maximum value out of their prized asset, it has to be this summer.
Speaking in an interview as quoted by the Mirror, Torres, when quizzed about his future, said that there is nothing new to report about. However, it appears to be more of a case of him not giving anything away.
“Right now, there is nothing at all, there is talk of many things like every year”
The takeover at Chelsea has been officially completed and the Blues can finally stop worrying about off-field issues and start focusing on rebuilding the squad for next season.
It comes as no surprise that centre-backs are a priority for the new owners with Chelsea finding themselves extremely understaffed in that department. Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen have left the club on free transfers and there is a chance that Cesar Azpilicueta could also follow suit.
This would leave the Blues with just Thiago Silva and Trevoh Chalobah as options in central defence going into next season. Levi Colwill, who is returning after an impressive loan spell with Huddersfield, could be an option but it remains to be seen if he will be trusted with a first-team role.
The Spaniard is undoubtedly a very solid option for the Blues and at 25, they will be getting a player who is still very young but also has a wealth of experience behind him. He could be the perfect replacement for losing Christensen, with the Dane also in a similar position in his career.
It remains to be seen if a move materialises for the Spanish defender but what is for sure is that centre-back will definitely be the priority for Chelsea this summer.
