According to TEAMtalk (h/t ESPN), Chelsea are interested in luring Anderlecht ace Sergio Gomez, who is also on the radar of Premier League rivals Manchester United.
Sergio Gómez is experiencing a highly productive spell with Belgian club Anderlecht. The Spaniard has already secured six goals and 13 assists in 28 appearances this campaign and continues to be a menace in the left wing-back position.
His incredible displays have attracted Chelsea and Man United’s attention. With Luke Shaw and Alex Telles in the picture to compete for starts, it remains to be seen what plans the Red Devils have for the 21-year-old defender. Our case, however, is a bit different.
Our first choice left-back Ben Chilwell has been ruled out for the rest of the season after surgery. His injury has played a part in us falling behind in the title race, with Tuchel trying several temporary solutions in his absence down that side.
Out-of-form midfielder Saúl Ñíguez was deployed there in the 3-3 draw against Zenit, whereas Malang Sarr was also seen taking the responsibility in Chelsea’s recent outing against Tottenham. Even Callum Hudson-Odoi has featured in that position recently.
We only have Marcos Alonso as a recognized left wing-back, which could create concerns in the second half of the season. Therefore, reinforcements are required to make our team competitive against the top clubs. We don’t need reminding of how important our full-backs are in the final third of the pitch for us.
It is believed that Chelsea are interested in signing Sergio Gomez and the Blues are considering him as a long-term solution rather than short-term help. A January transfer for the talented 21-year-old seems improbable, but our board is expected to keep tabs on him regardless. In that case, Thomas Tuchel’s side would have to beat Manchester United to his signature.
Gomez has shown that he is a potent full-back with the courage of venturing deep into attacking spaces. After watching Chilwell’s role under our German manager, it can be argued that Gomez could play a similar role for us- if we manage to sign him.
Having spent time in Spain, Germany and Belgium, Gomez certainly has a wealth of experience for someone who is just 21. The question remains- would he be of any significant use to us if we sign him in the upcoming windows, rather than January?
Chilwell could well be back in the fray for starting games by next season. In that situation, Gomez can compete with Alonso for starts down that flank. The ex-Fiorentina man isn’t getting any younger and the Anderlecht starlet can be a smart acquisition if Tuchel wants to find a long-term replacement, or understudy, for Alonso.
