According to El Nacional (h/t Football.London), with Barcelona agreeing to listen to offers for Frenkie de Jong, Chelsea could have the golden opportunity to sign the Dutch star in a cut-price deal.
Barcelona signed Frenkie de Jong by paying a whopping €86million to Ajax in the summer of 2019. The Dutch star was one of the hottest prospects of that transfer window as he starred for the Dutch side in the 2018/19 season.
He ended up winning the Eredivisie and also reached the semi-final of the Champions League, before bowing out to Tottenham Hotspur in a dramatic game. But it now seems like he could be on the move again.
After some bright spells in the initial few seasons at Camp Nou, the Dutch international has experienced a setback in the last few campaigns. Even though the 24-year-old star is still getting good game time under new manager Xavi, the club as a whole is going through a particularly grim phase.
Chelsea have shown an interest in signing de Jong. The West London side is even considering an offer of €40million. However, Barcelona would only consider a bid in the region of €60million.
But if the midfielder’s performance further deteriorates in the near future, then the Catalan team could lower their guards by settling for an offer near €50million – a number that Chelsea may not have a problem paying if they are serious about signing him.
Even though Chelsea have a robust midfield lineup that includes the likes of N’Golo Kanté, Mateo Kovačić, and Jorginho, recent injuries have created significant problems.
Thomas Tuchel signed Saúl Ñíguez to bolster the depth of our squad, but the Spaniard hasn’t been the solution to our problems and it remains to be seen what happens to him once his loan deal ends this month. Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have done a decent job when called upon, but they are yet to convince the manager of being regular starters at the club.
With Kante and Jorginho ageing, we may have to start searching for long-term alternatives, and Frenkie de Jong certainly falls in that category. His passing skills and composure on the ball is no secret to the footballing world, with the 24-year-old one of the shining stars in the current Barca team.
However, we have to be conscious of how much money we spend on the Dutch star. Billy Gilmour and Conor Gallagher are two of our very own academy graduates that could enter the first-team fray in the future, and we must sort out our priorities before we go out shopping in central midfield in the near future.
