Chelsea got off the hook against Manchester City as they were beaten by just one goal; however, the 1-0 scoreline could have looked entirely different if the Citizens converted a few more of the bulk of chances that they had.
Chelsea started the match in a defensive fashion, holding the line as firmly as possible. Even though our team mainly depended on counter-attacks in the first half, several sloppy passes from Malang Sarr and Hakim Ziyech broke our attacking flow.
As our team failed to get the ball running, the responsibility fell on the defensive line who stood their ground against the City attackers, preventing them from creating any clear-cut chances.
There wasn’t a lot of movement down the flanks as we saw in the first half of the season from the partnership of Ben Chilwell and Reece James. Even though César Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso gave good performances defensively, they couldn’t win the battle of pace against their counterparts.
Jorginho did not start in the midfield, so the responsibility was shared between N’Golo Kanté and Mateo Kovačić. And the duo was not at their best, especially the former Real Madrid man.
Failing to control the ball outside the penalty area, the Croatian created a clear-cut chance for Jack Grealish in the first half. We could have been penalised by the City striker if Kepa Arrizabalaga didn’t make an excellent save.
Kante’s fault, however, wasn’t excused by Kevin De Bruyne, who scored an absolute stunner after winning the duel against our French midfielder. The only goal of the game was enough to push us 13 points behind league leaders Manchester City.
We played much better in the second half when the senior players stepped up. However, Christian Pulisic and Ziyech both failed to show urgency before being substituted.
Liverpool would now have the chance of securing second position if they manage to win the game in hand when they take on Brentford tomorrow. However, it was Pep Guardiola’s side that came out as the big winners as they created a massive gap between them and the chasing pack.
Here is how the Blues faithful reacted on Twitter to the abysmal game that has all but put the final nail in our title race coffin.
