Championship club boss confident Chelsea loanee will not be recalled by Tuchel

Coventry City manager Mark Robins ruled out any talks with Chelsea regarding a recall for Ian Maatsen

According to Football.London, Mark Robins has suggested that Ian Maatsen will play for Coventry City until the end of the season despite returning to Chelsea recently.

Chelsea loanee Ian Maatsen is having a pretty successful spell at Coventry. The Dutch starlet has already secured 21 Championship appearances in this campaign- a big number for a 19-year-old. The left-back has also seldom shown impressive attacking vigour and defensive knowledge down that flank.

Chelsea starlet Ian Maatsen is currently playing at Coventry City on loan.

Despite having a good season, Ian Maatsen recently returned to Cobham, which naturally gave fuel to speculation about where he would play his football in the second half of the campaign.

Chelsea have to play the whole season without first-choice left-back Ben Chilwell after a recent surgery ruled out any possibility of his comeback. Despite looking elsewhere for solutions, recalling Maatsen was a possibility.

No Maatsen to Chelsea

However, Coventry City manager Mark Robins revealed that Maatsen has only returned to Cobham for medical checkups following his recent fitness issue, and that there is yet to be any talks about a long-term return to the West London club.

“Maats has been having some treatment and is back with Chelsea, so he won’t be available for the game this weekend.

Robins also suggested that he does not anticipate any contact from the Blues regarding a recall. He added:

“We don’t need confirmation. Obviously, he is with us until the end of the season unless we have a conversation with Chelsea, and there are extreme circumstances, I suppose. But from my point of view, we have not had contact with Chelsea, and I don’t anticipate any.”

Maatsen has enjoyed productive spells with Chelsea U18, U19 and U23 teams. Even though the Dutch youngster currently doesn’t have a lot of experience in the top-flight, he is currently very young and has a bright future ahead of him.

However, it seems the Dutch U21 international would have to return to Coventry City after completing his medical assessment. Thus, we have to move our focus to other alternatives. Kenedy is one player that we have recalled in that position from his loan spell at Flamengo.

Maatsen would still return to Stamford Bridge at the end of the season from the Sky Blues, but by then, Chilwell may well be back for next season. Nevertheless, with Alonso ageing and no longer the force he was a few years back, it could offer the youngster a chance to get some first-team minutes in our famous blue shirt.
