Chelsea’s loss against West Ham United could not have come at a worse time. Not only has it broken the good feeling surrounding the club, but also reduced the gap between the chasing pack to a measly two.
The same day that Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner joined the club, the Blues showcased there is still work to be done at the other end of the pitch.
It would not be amiss to say that Chelsea were the better team on the night. Alas, we have nothing to show for it as defensive frailties popped up once again.
We got a lucky break when West Ham United’s opener was ruled out by VAR. Rather than build on it, the rearguard kept making one mistake after another.
The last time we conceded three goals in a match was against Bayern Munich. West Ham are not Die Roten, not even close. If anything, the number of goals conceded was a cruel joke on the day we unveiled our new sponsor – “three”.
It is difficult to name one defensive player who came out of the game with credit. Right from Kepa Arrizabalaga to Antonio Rudiger, everyone will have to pick up the slack.
Our problems are a far cry from the defensively solid teams in which Frank Lampard played. Led by John Terry, the Blues were a notoriously hard side to score against.
Following the performance, a number of Chelsea fans took to Twitter calling for Terry to join the backroom staff. Currently at Aston Villa, the former skipper would be able to make a telling difference to our backline.
After all, it cannot get worse than it already is. We take a look at some of the fan tweets below.
