Nicolas Jackson backs Enzo Fernandez on racism issue
Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson backs Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez after his recent issues regarding racist chants. The Senegal striker has shared his picture with Enzo on the Chelsea training ground, to show support for the Argentine midfielder, per ESPN.
The 23-year-old midfielder was accused of singing racist chants against French team players with his teammates following the Copa America win on Sunday. The Argentine shared the video of their victory celebration in the team bus after clinching the 16th Copa America trophy by beating Colombia in extra time at Miami. The video went viral after Argentine players mocked the Afro-French players in a song, whose parents hail from countries like Angola, Cameroon, and Nigeria, suggesting that despite holding French passports, they are not truly French.
The video went viral through social media, and Argentine players received criticism from all over the world. The French Football Association also confirmed they will reach out to FIFA for further legal action against Argentine players. The French players from different clubs have expressed their disagreement publically through social media.
Chelsea’s French players Wesley Fofana and Axel Disasi have also reacted to the issue by unfollowing their fellow clubmate Enzo Fernandez on social media handles. Fofana also shared the video of Argentine players signing a racial song with the description ‘Football in 2024: uninhibited racism’.
Jackson to support Enzo
The players and football pundits have reacted to the issue instantly and it was a dark day for the Argentine player. He was also criticised by his French club-mates and they have expressed their worry about the issue. Enzo was also backed by the West London club striker, Nicolas Jackson. He has shared the picture with the young midfielder quickly after Fofana’s reaction.
The Senegal international joined last summer in the club and had a decent season. The striker also shared a good relationship with Fernandez and he is backing his clubmate in a critical time.
Chelsea have started their pre-season training in Cobham and the issue may affect the rapport of the players in the dressing room. A group of players in the squad have already turned against the player and along with Jackson, some players may back Fernandez. The Argentine young star could join the team soon and he will be part of the main squad for the upcoming season. The West London club has also instigated an internal inquiry against Fernandez.
