Chelsea star Cole Palmer helps England to secure quarter-final spot
After the stunning win against Slovakia in the extra time of the Euro Round of 16, Chelsea star Cole Palmer sends message to his fans through social media. The English international shared his delight in qualifying for the Euro quarter-final by sharing pictures with the caption “till the end. onto the quarters!!”. The 22-year-old made his second appearance for the Three Lions squad in Euro 2024 yesterday.
The England fans were so optimistic before the beginning of the European Championship despite the fact that they lost the last Euro championship in the final against Italy. However, the group stage did not go according to their expectations. The English side only managed to win one game in the group stage against Serbia. Despite being the group champions, England’s gaffer Gareth Southgate was criticised by many for not giving Cole Palmer enough time on the pitch.
Southgate also started his Round of 16 match against Slovakia without including Palmer in the starting eleven. Slovakia dominated the first half of the knockout game with Ivan Schranz’s goal. Southgate was forced to change tactics for the next half to qualify for the next level. He subbed in Palmer in the 66th minute, which added more power to England’s attacking line. Bukayo Saka was shifted to the left-back position to give Palmer the right flank.
The continuous attack through both wings made the Slovakian defence restless. The offensive style gifted England an equaliser with a stunning bicycle kick from Jude Bellingham in the additional minutes of regular time. Southgate was not ready to make any changes in his tactics for the extra time, and Harry Kane sealed the win for England with his banger in the opening minute of extra time.
Palmer the Game Changer
Cole Palmer was a game-changer in several matches for Chelsea in the last campaign. His ability to run with the ball into the box has helped the West London club in many instances. His impressive performance in the league also made him the Premier League Young Player of the Season. The game-changing performance for the England national squad last night may give him a chance in the starting eleven for the next match. Southgate has faith in the Chelsea star, which made him pull Saka down to the defensive line in the last match.
Chelsea’s new manager, Enzo Maresca, would also be happy with his performance for England. The Italian gaffer would use the winger as a key player in his team for the next season. Palmer scored 22 goals and 11 assists for the Blues in the last campaign. So the manager can rely on him for more goals in the upcoming season.
Palmer can contribute more to England’s Euro journey, it was proved through his last night performance. If Gareth Southgate could win the title in Germany, it would be a massive boost for the English players.
