Rival PL captain plotted shock Chelsea switch in January

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang considered Chelsea transfer in January

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang considered the possibility of making the switch to Chelsea in the January transfer window. However, the move fell through because of his wage demands.

One of the most prolific goalscorers in Europe, Aubameyang joined Arsenal in January 2018 from Borussia Dortmund in a £56m deal. He has been their best player ever since. He has scored 27 goals in 43 matches in all competitions this season.

However, with his contract expiring in less than a year, there have been a lot of speculations surrounding his future for quite a while now. And as per the aforementioned report, the 31-year-old Gabonese international tried to move to Chelsea in the January transfer window.

The report claims that Aubameyang’s representatives sounded out Chelsea over the possibility of a transfer. However, any chances of a potential transfer fell apart due to the former Dortmund star’s wage demands.

Chelsea had been on the lookout for a new striker back in the January transfer window as Tammy Abraham’s form was dwindling, while Olivier Giroud had pretty much been frozen out by Frank Lampard at the time.

It has been even claimed that Lampard was keen on signing Aubameyang, but the board did not sanction a move.

It all seems to have worked out for the best though. Having not signed a new striker in January, we were able to go out and secure the transfer of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig.
