Rumours making the rounds hint that Chelsea have all but wrapped up the signature of Bayer Leverkusen’s André Schurrle, with the intention of using Kevin De Bruyne as a makeshift loanee for Bayer.
Giving the enormous fee, supposedly £20 million, to be used in executing the deal, many are beginning to question the logic behind this plan whilst some feel KDB, who his having an excellent season, should be recalled to the team in the summer to team up with the trio of Oscar, Mata, and Hazard.
We do know that Schurrle is more of a striker capable of playing as a winger; for a player of 22 years, you feel he’d perfectly suit Chelsea’s transfer strategy of spotting young prospective talents to strenghten the rebuilding process currently being witnessed.
Schurrle is a pacey player, he’s gifted with both feet and if you want to see more of David Luiz screamers, well, he could pull one out too! Plus, he has also managed to score 9 goals and has 5 assists for Bayer this season but the question is – Would Chelsea exhibit shrewdness by spending £20 million on a promising but largely unproven player, whilst stalling another rising talent in KDB?
The fact that Lampard will probably leave at the end of the season highlights the need for a midfielder all the more. The popular belief is that the club would recall KDB whose 6 goals, 8 assists and impact on games indicates that he can surely fill Lamp’s boot and I feel his inclusion into the team would be timely and needed. His presence would also boost the bench’s depth as that’s been another contributory factor in Chelsea’s poor season.
In a way, Chelsea’s scurry for attackers is understandable. It’s common knowlegde that we have struggled all season with Torres in the striking position and the subsequent addition of Ba hasn’t lessened the need for more proficient/clinical strikers. Based on this fact, their is an outlying notion that striking a deal with Schurrle might not be that uncalled for afterall. His dribbling skills, pace and his other nimble features could be just what the strikeforce needs. Also, with Lukaku returning, there would be a variety of qualities for the coach to use in his line up.
However, this idea does not dispel the sceptical outlook of the proposed deal. We shouldn’t forget too soon how poorly Lukaku’s course with Chelsea has been handled and with the FFP policy set to be implemented soon, it’s bewildering that the board are still willing to go the whole hog and spend huge fees in players, before shipping them out on loan.
We’ve always known that we like to go all out to get players, especially as the impending signs point to a major overhaul to be in effect next season. The likes of Malouda, Benayoun, Hilario, Marin, Lampard, Ferreira all could well leave. A huge vacuum would be created but fans would also want the club to show a matured sense of astuteness in carrying out these deals.
Only time will tell, but I think it’s a matter of time before we have to spend our money on players who will be given the chance at the Bridge, and not shipped out on loan.
