Chelsea fans had a special chant for Mason Mount after Cole Palmer’s goal vs Manchester United

At the point where it was 2-0 to Chelsea in the eventual 4-2 win for the Blues at Stamford Bridge over Manchester United, the fans in the stadium had a “special” chant for Cobham Graduate and one-time fan-favourite Mason Mount, who moved to Erik ten Hag’s side in the future amid a phase of turbulence at Chelsea.

A goal from Conor Gallagher and a hat-trick from Cole Palmer eventually sealed the result in Chelsea’s favour, after the Blues went down 3-2 with Alejandro Garnacho scoring a brace and conceding a goal from Bruno Fernandes. However, in those fifteen minutes between Cole’s first goal and United’s opener, Chelsea were breezing past visitors, leading the Stamford Bridge faithful to dedicate a chant to Mount, who was one of our own not very long ago. Here is what they sang via BBC:

“Mason, what’s the score?”

The momentary tribute, for lack of a better word, to Mount highlighted the lingering sentiment among the fans. Mount, once hailed as one of their own, now found himself on the opposing side, a stark reminder of the nature of football allegiances. What’s worse is he saw Chelsea’s comeback on the field after coming on in the 86th minute.

(WAS) Cobham’s finest!

The result against Manchester United not only bolstered Chelsea’s position in the league standings but also provided a glimmer of hope for Mauricio Pochettino’s future at the club. Despite recent struggles and inconsistencies, the victory offered a reprieve for the Argentine manager, signalling a potential resurgence for the Blues under his stewardship.

However, amidst the celebrations, there was an underlying sense of melancholy surrounding Mount’s departure. While it was understandable that he sought new opportunities amid Chelsea’s transitional phase, his decision to join a direct league rival left a palpable sense of disappointment among the Chelsea faithful.

The chant directed at Mount served as a poignant reminder of the emotional attachment between players and supporters. While the game is ultimately about competition and results, it is also about the bonds forged between players and fans, transcending the boundaries of loyalty and allegiance.

Just how fast the night changes.

In the end, it is good riddance. Manchester United might have a better league standing at the moment, but will that be the case as the season goes on? Only time will tell. One thing is certain, whether or not Mason Mount wanted to leave the Blues is a different question, but the fact that he actually did leaves a kick in the teeth for fans who have watched him grow.
