Wolves boss Gary O'Neil breaks silence over failed loan move for Chelsea's Armando Broja

Wolves boss Gary O’Neil expresses his ‘disappointment’ in failing to sign Broja

Wolves boss Gary O’Neil shares his ‘disappointment’ over missing out on Armando Broja, per The Guardian. Wolves were the favourites to sign the Albanian but Chelsea’s neighbours, Fulham, won the battle ultimately. The manager said:

“We couldn’t afford to do it financially, where it ended up,” O’Neil said. “But we haven’t been deducted 10 points, we’re still together, we’re still putting in performances that show we’re all together. We’ll try and keep it moving that way.”

Armando Broja was constantly under the radar during this transfer window. The Blues rejected an offer from Wolves last week, before agreeing to Fulham’s terms. The 22-year-old has just a goal and an assist from 13 games.

Most of his time during the campaign was spent nursing a cruciate ligament injury. Chelsea hoped to sell the forward permanently but the asking price made many clubs reluctant to spend. Broja’s will be loaned for six months and no purchase clause is added to the deal.

What next for Chelsea?

It is not like Mauricio Pochettino has a sea full of options. Despite having access to a good bunch of players, there aren’t many that the Argentine can call ‘reliable’. Broja’s departure means the onus will now be on Nicolas Jackson.

Pochettino did try deploying Raheem Sterling and Cole Palmer in the false nine roles but it doesn’t seem like a viable option in the long term. The duo has been doing good for the club and Pochettino rather use them as poachers.

Armando Broja will be satisfied to join Fulham, where more playing time will be guaranteed for him. With Armando Brija out of the picture, all eyes will now on be Conor Gallagher.

The Chelsea stand-in captain was linked to Tottenham throughout the season despite being Pochettino’s main man. It is to be expected that the management will raise Conor’s price and hope to sell him in the summer. It could be a great move for Chelsea to play by the Profit and Sustainability Rule.
