Jurgen Klopp feels Liverpool might have scored more goals against Chelsea had Darwin Nunez been clinical
Jurgen Klopp might have given some solace to Chelsea fans after claiming Liverpool could have scored four goals in their 4-1 win over the Blues at Anfield.
Klopp, who decided to step down as Reds manager, saw his side dismantle the Mauricio Pochettino team and fire four goals past them. Diogo Jota opened the scoring in the 23rd minute before academy player Conor Bradley doubled their lead in the 39th minute.
The second half saw Liverpool continue their attacking intent when a Dominik Szoboszlai header made sure the hosts secured three guaranteed points.
Chelsea finally found a breakthrough in the 71st minute when Christopher Nkunku rolled the ball past Alisson Becker, but it was too late as Luiz Diaz scored the Reds’ fourth goal inflicting a heavy defeat on the Blues.
But Klopp feels Chelsea would have conceded more goals after Darwin Nunez hit the post four times, but the German manager was content with the side’s performance, (h/t Express), and told TNT:
“The counter pressing was top. We had them in places they didn’t want to be. The high press was really good. It is fair to say we could have scored one or two more.”
If Nunez had not squandered penalties and had continued to be clinical in front of goal, they would have netted four goals. We were being picked apart and exploited by them; we were powerless to contain them as they were all over the pitch. We had a humbling loss, and we have to determine what went wrong. It was fortunate for us that Nunez missed those opportunities, otherwise, else this would have been the most disgraceful defeat in our history.
They were a far more established side that was aware of our deficiencies and understood when to strike while we were still falling into the traps. Their pressure pulled us back, leaving us clumsy and unable to function as a cohesive team. As a result, we made mistakes.
