Darren Bent believes Reece James can make it to the 2024 Euro squad for England if he is fit
Tottenham Hotspur cult hero Darren Bent makes unexpected claims about Reece James being featured in the English squad for the EURO 2024 while speaking to talkSPORT’s YouTube podcast. The former Spurs player believes the Chelsea star could make it, however, under one condition. He said:
Reece James can’t stay fit but if he can stay fit, he’ll go (to EURO 2024), 100%. But if he doesn’t stay fit, he’s not going. Even if he plays two games.
Darren Bent also emphasized how Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold holds the upper hand in securing the right-back spot for the Three Lions. His co-host Andy Goldstein agrees with Bent and added Reece James falls behind the pecking order with Kyle Walker, Kieren Trippier and TAA being the favourites.
The UEFA EURO 2024 will be held in Germany between 14th June and 14th July. Reece James’ chances to make it into the national side look feeble as the Chelsea captain is down with a recurring injury.
Reece James’ consistency with injuries
Reece James has missed 105 games for club and country from 2019. He was out of action for 554 days! The numbers are scary and enough to end a player’s career. However, Reece James seems to have his coach and fans’ backing. Mauricio Pochettino believes in the return of his captain.
As of now, James will be out of action until March 11, 2024. James marked his return from the hamstring injury on October 22, 2023 against Arsenal. The 24-year-old played seven more games, though not fully, before being injured again.
Reece James getting back to his complete fitness will not be enough to guarantee him regular playing minutes with the Blues. This further makes his inclusion in Gareth Southgate’s side difficult for the UEFA EURO 2024.
