Joao Felix recalled Chelsea stint in 2024 New Year post

It feels like it was ages ago when Joao Felix was a part of Chelsea and yet, it was not so long ago. Around a year ago, the Blues signed the Atletico Madrid forward on loan in the winter transfer window. After a bright start, his time with the West London club was largely insignificant.

Felix since returned to Atletico Madrid but did not play another game for Diego Simeone’s side. He was loaned out to Barcelona for the entire season and has thrived in Xavi Hernandez’s system. He has proven to be hungry in front of goal and determined to prove a point.

The Portuguese forward’s career has failed to take off in the manner everyone imagined during his time at Benfica. One of the biggest talents in the world at that time, Felix had the world at his feet when he decided to move to Atletico.

Looking back, there is no doubt that this is decision that the Portuguese star would go on to regret. Despite years of disappointing performances, one thing that just didn’t change was the player’s obvious talent.

Xavi has so far managed to make the most of Felix’s talent but there is a feeling that the player still hasn’t hit top gear. At his best, Felix could be a top player. His best performance in a Blues shirt came on his debut, before getting sent-off.

Despite a poor time at Chelsea, it looks like the player keeps it close to his heart. In his Instagram post for New Year, Felix posted an image of himself in a Blues jumper, indicating that he still has love left for the club.

To be fair to him, Felix was the example of “wrong place at the wrong time” at Chelsea. Had he moved to West London at any other time, things might have turned out differently for him. He joined a club in turmoil that only kept slipping further as the season went.

Could there be a future for Felix at Chelsea? I highly doubt it. Considering the plethora of attackers at our disposal, there just doesn’t seem to be a realistic possibility for the Portuguese forward to find a place in our plans.

Unless something drastic happens in the future, Felix’s time at Stamford Bridge will always be remembered as a “what could have been story”. Let’s wait and see how it pans out.
