Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo was reckless with his tackle on Gordon in the 2nd minute of the game
Moises Caicedo‘s rough tackle on Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon earned him criticism from Jamie Redknapp. It took the Chelsea star just two minutes to get into the referee’s books.
Chelsea progressed after a high-intensity clash to book a berth in the semi-final of the EFL Cup. The Magpies saw exit following a 4-2 penalty shootout loss. Former Liverpool and Tottenham star expressed his disbelief in Moises Caicedo’s recklessness during the face-off.
According to BBC Sport (h/t Sky Sports), he said,
“What I can’t understand is why would you do something like that two minutes into the game? Caicedo is nowhere near the ball. Has he tried to hurt him?
Redknapp believes the Chelsea midfielder intended to hurt Gordon who was chasing a well-placed pass. The Newcastle United winger was clipped on the calf by Caicedo. Despite an early yellow, the defensive midfielder stayed on the pitch for the entirety.
Chelsea is walking on a tightrope
The Blues did ease past Newcastle United after a scintillating fightback. Mykhaylo Mudryk’s 92nd-minute goal pushed the game into shootouts, won by Chelsea. The West London club had to fight hard for the win and that is something the fans are tired of watching.
Considering the amount spent on recruitment and the squad depth, it is high time Chelsea gave something for their fans to feel good about. Injuries have been a major concern for Pochettino. The suspension of a crucial player is something the manager won’t be able to handle at the moment.
Moises Caceido’s careless tackle could have proven to be expensive, especially when he dons a defensive role. Jamie Redknapp’s criticism is justified as another absence within the squad will mark Chelsea’s further downfall.
The club has now entered the last four of the EFL Cup. Mauricio Pochettino will look to salvage something out of this season by gunning for the trophy. Their Premier League hunt is realistically a lost cause.
