“Multi-club ownership is a danger to football”- Strasbourg supporters send blunt letter to Chelsea owner Todd Boehly

Chelsea show interest in signing Manchester City starlet James McAtee.

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly currently owns stakes in Ligue 1 club Strasbourg

Strasbourg fans express discontent with Chelsea owner, Todd Boehly, who purchased stakes in the Ligue 1 club and have sent a letter outlining potential issues.

Boehly’s aim to build a team centres on acquiring young players, mirroring Chelsea’s current strategy. His first year as owner saw Strasbourg finish 12th in the league, a disappointment.

Mauricio Pochettino’s appointment at Chelsea was hoped to be a turning point and after a poor start, have now settled with two consecutive wins. The young squad is starting to gel on the pitch.

However, Strasbourg fans feel the American owner is using their club as a training ground for future Chelsea players. The club is viewed as a ‘feeder’ to Premier League giants.

Strasbourg currently stands 11th in the league, and fans worry about their club’s misuse by owners. The Fédération Supporters RCS stated (h/t Football.London):

“Beyond the Strasbourg case, we wish to also remind you that multi-club ownership is a danger to football. The pyramid system that this system is slowly locking into place, and even more strongly than was already the case, risks reducing the majority of clubs to a simple objective of developing young players and helping the few clubs at the top of the pyramid in order to yield a profit for their business. Clearly, it is a very worrying perspective.”

In football, this is a reality. Boehly, who invested €56 million (£48 million) in the club, acknowledges the financial power of big clubs, which entices smaller clubs to sell their talented players.

Strasbourg need time and patience to become competitive. The owner’s support will aid their growth. While supporters are frustrated, they should realize that these talented players will transform the team into a contender, and the process will continue.
