Chelsea look set to kickstart contract negotiations with Conor Gallagher
According to The Daily Mail, Chelsea are ready to begin negotiations with Conor Gallagher regarding a new contract following his excellent start to the 2023/24 season.
The 23-year-old was touted to leave Stamford Bridge earlier in the summer. Despite being linked with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur all summer, a move to North London failed to materialise and Gallagher stayed put at Chelsea.
The English midfielder has since made nine appearances for the club across all competitions and is more or less a regular fixture in the first XI. Gallagher was also handed the armband by Mauricio Pochettino, highlighting his growing influence in the Blues squad.
Gallagher’s contract at Stamford Bridge expires in 2025 and it is in Chelsea’s best interests to secure him to a new deal as quickly as possible. If he stays, we will have him locked in for the long term and should he be sold, we will then have leverage when it comes to negotiations.
The 23-year-old’s spot in the first XI is far form a given thanks to the massive investment made by the club to bring in Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo in recent windows. With Carney Chukwuemeka and Romeo Lavia also set to return from injury soon, there will be more competition for spots in the middle of the park.
However, Gallagher has to be praised for taking his chances this season. He has left the Chelsea management happy and certainly has made a case for himself to play a role in the club’s plans.
The midfielder was also rewarded for his good performance as Gareth Southgate named him in the England squad for the upcoming international break. It is certainly proving to be a memorable start to the campaign for the 23-year-old.
