Tottenham’s James Maddison praises Chelsea’s young talent, Conor Gallagher, calls him a good all-rounder
In a recent video on the England national team’s YouTube channel, Tottenham and England star James Maddison recently heaped praise on 23-year-old Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, describing him as a “good all-rounder.”
Gallagher has cemented himself as a regular starter under new Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino this season. He was also part of England’s latest squad during the recent international break.
In the video, Maddison along with other England stars Jude Bellingham, Marcus Rashford, and Declan Rice were discussing player ratings for the new EA FC24 video game.
“He’s a good all-rounder…He’s quite physical, he’s good, decent pace, decent dribbling.”
At just 23 years old, Gallagher is already excelling as a box-to-box presence in Chelsea’s midfield. In addition to good performance in Premier League minutes, he has become a regular for Gareth Southgate’s English national team.
Gallagher gained valuable experience during a breakout loan season at Crystal Palace in 2021-22. He was also a very important player in Palace under manager Patrick Vieira. There he had scored 6 goals and had 3 assists while maintaining a very strong midfield presence.
Gallagher had joined Chelsea’s youth academy at the age of eight. There he was a very good player and earned the academy’s Player of the Year award for the 2018/19 season. Subsequently, he was loaned out to Charlton Athletic and Swansea City in the 2019/20 season and then to West Bromwich Albion in the 2020/21 season. Then he got loaned to Palace in the 2021/22 season and finally had his breakthrough. The Blues could no longer ignore him and finally brought him back the next season.
Gallagher’s all-action style, coupled with his well-rounded technical skills, energy, and work rate have made him a quick favorite at Stamford Bridge. Maddison’s praise indicates his national team potential as well.
With Chelsea currently in transition under their new manager Mauricio Pochettino, Gallagher has an opportunity to cement himself as a building block for the future. If he continues to keep his head in the game and train diligently, he will no doubt become a world-class player.
