Asmir Begovic slams Chelsea’s recent transfer strategy

Speaking on The Byline podcast (h/t football.london), former Chelsea goalkeeper Asmir Begovic has come out against the club’s transfer strategy after yet another summer of heavy spending.

The arrival of Todd Boehly at Chelsea in 2022 saw the club shift posts in their transfer strategy. The Blues have since thrown money at a problem and have more or less completely revamped their playing squad. Gone is the core that won us the 2021 UEFA Champions League as we aim to build a new era of dominance.

Chelsea broke the British transfer record for Moises Caicedo this summer but they also splashed the cash to land several other young players in an effort to build a solid young roster of talent. But it is debatable if the squad as a whole has gotten any better for the 2023-24 campaign.

Speaking on the issue, Begovic revealed his surprise at what appears to be a lack of logic in Chelsea’s recruitment plan. While he appears to have nothing against landing young players, Begovic raises concerns regarding the lack of top experienced players on the roster.

“What is going on with the recruitment of these players? Why is Chelsea rebuilding? Why are they in a transition? This is one of the best places in the world to play football.”

One could say that the former Blues shot-stopper has a point. Thiago Silva is by far the senior-most player at the club. Apart from Conor Gallagher and Reece James who came through the system, most of our roster is full of new players who arrived in the Boehly era.

Todd Boehly is not known for keeping his chequebook closed.

Begovic is clearly critical of Boehly’s handling of the club and believes the rebuilding has gotten the Blues no closer to challenging Manchester City for footballing dominance. If anything, we have taken one step forward and maybe three or four backwards.

“It’s not the Chelsea I remember, that’s for sure.”

While Roman Abramovich did have his faults, Chelsea had a structure that was set to achieve continued success regardless of the personnel in the front office. It is a far cry from the uncertainty that dogs Stamford Bridge today.

It is said that success has a thousand fathers and until Chelsea get back to winning ways, Boehly will have questions to answer. Hopefully, Mauricio Pochettino and co can turn things around and make us proud once again to support an organization that prizes winning above all.
