Ian Maatsen contract decision to affect Marc Cucurella Chelsea future
The future of Chelsea star Marc Cucurella depends on the decision Ian Maatsen will make regarding his contract at the club, according to football.london.
As things stand, the Blues are looking to tie the Holland national down to fresh terms. The Stamford Bridge side have offered the 21-year-old a new long-term deal, but the left-back is unsure whether he will put pen to paper.
Maatsen is attracting interest from a number of top teams from around Europe. In the Premier League, West Ham United and Burnley have him on their radar. On the other hand, Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund are also keeping tabs on the Holland national.
Cucurella has been made available for a temporary move by Chelsea in the ongoing transfer window. To that end, as per transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Manchester United have made contact with the Blues for the Spain international.
Last summer, the Stamford Bridge side signed the 25-year-old from Brighton & Hove Albion. The full-back’s impressive displays at the Seagulls compelled the West London club to acquire his services.
Unfortunately, Cucurella has had a hard time so far at Chelsea. The Blues have been unable to bring the best out of the left-back over the last year and he has struggled to perform well.
Ben Chilwell looks to be the first choice under Mauricio Pochettino. However, the former Leicester City star has had his fair share of fitness issues in recent seasons.
Therefore, just like we have a decent deputy for Reece James in Malo Gusto, it would evidently be wise to have adequate cover for Chilwell in our ranks.
