Mauricio Pochettino wants Chelsea to not panic buy in the final days of the summer transfer window
Speaking to the media ahead of the Luton Town game, Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has warned the club against panic buying in the final days of this transfer window.
Blues have done a lot of business, both incoming and outgoing, in this window so far. But, it still seems like they are 2-3 signings away from competing for a top-four finish.
It is revealed that the club is working on signing an offensive player in the coming days. They have lost a lot of players due to injury in that department in the past days and weeks.
But, Pochettino would not want any signing to be a panicked one. Here’s what the Argentine said (h/t The Telegraph, subscription required):
“It is easy to say we need more offensive players, but I think we have offensive players and they need to recover.
“If you bring in a player that is not fit or needs to adapt to the Premier League, maybe you are going to spend the same time you wait for Broja, or Nkunku or Carney. Then you are going to create a mess in the squad.
“We were talking about [signing] one offensive player, the right profile. If we can add the right profile, yes, but not to bring players so we can add one more. We don’t want to stop the evolution of some young guys, Broja, Nkunku.”
This is well put by Pochettino. If the injured players had been fit, the squad would have had enough depth for this season. But, we are where we are!
Christopher Nkunku won’t return before December while Carney Chukwuemeka is out for six weeks. Mykhaylo Mudryk became the latest to join the injury list, although he is expected to come back soon. Armando Broja, who picked up an ACL injury last December, won’t be rushed back understandably so.
Chelsea were interested in Brennan Johnson of Nottingham Forest until very recently. But, it has been reported that although they are looking at a player of similar profile, they won’t make a move for the Welsh international.

It remains to be seen who that player is. Deivid Washington has been announced as the new striker, but he is 18 and has hardly played any first-team football. Let’s hope the club adheres to Pochettino’s ‘panic buy’ warning and only signs a player that can fit into the manager’s style of play and the intensity of the league.
