Carragher outlines three key positions that Chelsea are yet to reinforce

Jamie Carragher believes Chelsea still need to bring in a goalkeeper, centre-back and striker

Jamie Carragher has admitted that he still thinks Chelsea lacks a competitive goalkeeper, a striker and centre-back to compete at a high level. This comes after the Blues succumbed to a 3-1 defeat against West Ham United on matchday two.

The Blues have spent around £1 billion since Todd Boehly took over at Stamford Bridge last summer. But there has been a negligible positive result on the pitch as we struggle to put on a consistent run of positive results.

Last season, the Blues finished 12th in the Premier League, which necessitated an overhaul of the squad. New manager Mauricio Pochettino is yet to secure his first competitive win despite a revamp of sorts of his roster.

Speaking on the issue, Carragher echoed that the club lacks strength in key areas. This comes after Chelsea missed plenty of chances against the Hammers. (h/t Daily Mail) He further added:

”I do feel that even though I’ve been really impressed with them in the first two games, if you asked me how many players they need to challenge Manchester City—and I’m not talking about winning the league—I still think they need a goalkeeper, even though they just signed Sanchez. I still think they need a top centre-half because Thiago Silva is 38. I don’t think there is a real out-and-out centre forward.”

If we need to challenge a team like Manchester City, then we will have to wait as our squad is not balanced. The chemistry on the pitch is slowly forming. While we saw some good moments, the lack of cutting edge is visible.

Enzo Fernandez missed a penalty, which changed the scenario of the game. Once the Hammers took the lead, they parked a bus, which made it difficult for us to score goals. Surely, we should get better as the players get used to playing with each other.

We have already addressed our goalkeeper and centre-back areas. We have ample defensive depth with Benoit Badiashile also recovering. While Djordje Petrovic is an interesting addition, he is far from a world-class last line of defence.

A reliable goalscorer is the need of the hour and where the club should focus their attentions in the final days of the summer transfer window. Hopefully Boehly and Co will ensure Pochettino has the resources at hand to take us back to the top.
