Liverpool have approached Paris Saint-Germain as they prepare to open talks to sign Kylian Mbappe amid Chelsea interest
Liverpool have opened talks to bring Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) superstar Kylian Mbappe to Anfield amid Chelsea’s interest.
According to the Mirror, (h/t Football.London) the Reds want to bring the forward on a season-long loan after the 24-year-old informed PSG that he won’t be extending his contract beyond 2024.
This has made the Ligue 1 giants put the former AS Monaco player on sale as they look to gain valuable profit from his exit after they signed him for £166 million. Other Premier League clubs, such as Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move as well.
It is understood that clubs are expected to submit the player plus cash given his massive valuation. However, Mbappe’s ideal club remains Real Madrid, who are trying to lower PSG’s asking price.
What next for Mbappe?
The former Monaco forward also had a giant offer from Saudi club Al-Hilal, but he rejected it despite PSG accepting the offer. it shows he still wants to play at the top level even if it costs him money.
And that raises the question if Chelsea were ever a serious contender. We would certainly want to think so, given our recent history, two Champions League titles in the last 11 years, and the financial clout under Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital’s ownership.
Mbappe joining Chelsea would have been a solid boost to Chelsea’s attacking line but this seems like a dream move which may not materialise. We aren’t in the Champions League next season and there are no guarantees we will finish in the top four.
One can argue that one of Mbappe’s main complaints at the Parc des Princes would be their failure to win the UCL. So if Chelsea can’t promise participation in the short run, it could be a hindrance. That is the same case with Liverpool, who will play in the UEFA Europa League next season.

Not to mention, a player of his ilk would command huge wages. This is a transfer we are better off distancing ourselves from. We can instead use this money to sign other proven players. There is no doubt that Mbappe would instantly be our best player upon arrival, but it is a very, very hard ask.
