Chelsea appreciate Celta Vigo midfielder Gabri Veiga as the midfield reshuffle takes centre-stage
As per the latest column by journalist Ben Jacobs for Caught Offside, Chelsea appreciate 21-year-old Celta Vigo midfielder Gabri Veiga because of how versatile the player is amidst the club’s focus on midfield reshuffle.
It was also mentioned in the piece that the Blues are looking to sell Conor Gallagher. Once that happens, they would aim to buy an attack-minded midfielder. Veiga fits the mould of a central midfielder with an eye for goals and assists.
As per Evening Standard, Chelsea rejected a bid from West Ham United for Gallagher. London rivals Tottenham are also interested in the Englishman. It seems like he will leave the club sooner or later.
Here’s an excerpt from the piece written by Jacobs for Caught Offside:
“(Gabri Veiga) is appreciated because he can play centrally or out wide and scored 18 goals and got seven assists in all competitions last season.
“I think if Chelsea sell Conor Gallagher they will move quickly for an attack-minded midfielder. West Ham have seen a bid rejected for Gallagher for around £40m. He has got plenty of minutes in pre-season under Mauricio Pochettino, but Chelsea will sell if the price is right.”
It remains to be seen what price is enough for Chelsea to sell Gallagher. They cannot get too greedy about it because the midfielder didn’t play much last season and the potential buyers are not the ones with bottomless transfer budgets.
If they manage to sell Gallagher and switch the focus to signing Veiga, it would be a massive upgrade. The latter can play as a central midfielder or attacking midfielder with an eye for goals. He works hard off the ball and is technically sound to make the ball talk even in tight areas.
We know Chelsea are working towards getting Moises Caicedo from Brighton as well. Although the club has reached an impasse over that pursuit, they have to do what it takes to sign the Ecuadorian after a mass exodus in midfield this summer.

Moreover, regardless of what happens with the Caicedo deal, the groundwork on Veiga must be done. The Spaniard could be an ideal Mason Mount replacement as a playmaker who can operate as an attacking number eight.
