Paulo Dybala to sign a new contract with AS Roma amidst interest from Chelsea and English clubs
As per Italian outlet Calciomercato.com (h/t Football London), Paulo Dybala is willing to sign a new deal with AS Roma amidst interest from English clubs, including Chelsea.
A couple of days ago, it was revealed in Metro that Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino wants to sign Dybala in this summer transfer window. The Argentinian connection was probably one of the reasons behind that link.
But, it seems as if the 29-year-old is happy in Rome and will sign a new contract with Roma. The Serie A outfit are planning to significantly increase his base salary and remove the release clause from the new contract, which was €12m for foreign clubs and €20m for Italian sides.
Dybala arrived at the club from Juventus last summer and had a decent first season there. The Argentina international scored 18 goals and assisted eight in 38 appearances in all competitions.
The 29-year-old is an exceptional talent who is very good on the ball. He has all the technical capabilities to create chances in the final third, score goals and run the play for his time in between the lines.
Although he played most of his career as a number nine for Chelsea before moving to Arsenal this summer, Kai Havertz is a player similar in profile to Dybala. So, we can see why Pochettino might have wanted to sign the latter.
With that not looking like a possibility now, Chelsea can move on and see what they can do to bolster their midfield and forward line. They have signed Nicolas Jackson to strengthen the number nine position, but there is more to be done to add goals to this team.
Perhaps Christopher Nkunku can be played as a No. 9 but it won’t be a bad decision to add Dybala’s versatility, experience and ability regardless. That being said, it surely hinges on him potentially signing a new deal at the Stadio Olimpico.
