Pochettino backed to loan out struggling Chelsea January acquisition

Arsenal legend Paul Merson touts Chelsea FC's unpredictability as an edge over Arsenal.

Charlie Adam believes Mauricio Pochettino could send Mykhaylo Mudryk out on loan

Mykhaylo Mudryk has been warned by Charlie Adam that if he doesn’t adapt to life at Chelsea under Mauricio Pochettino, he may be sent out on loan.

The £88 million signing of the Ukrainian international was one of the most costly acquisitions under Todd Boehly’s regime. Having beat off Arsenal to his signature, expectations were high. With a mere two assists in 15 appearances, Mudryk has fallen well short of expectations.

Since joining the Blues from a Ukrainian club, the former Shakhtar Donetsk player has played less and has yet to score for the team. To call his first half-season in London poor would be an understatement.

Pochettino will take over as Chelsea’s manager in the coming days, as Frank Lampard’s spell as interim manager will come to a close at the end of the current campaign.

Meanwhile, Adam feels Mudryk could be sent out on loan if he fails to settle himself at Chelsea as per BBC Sport: (h/t Express). After all, it is Pochettino’s call.

“It’s not easy when they’re on six- or seven-year contracts. It’s not just what the owner wants; Pochettino is the man now. He has to make the decision.”

“He might not fancy Mudryk. He might come in and say, ‘Don’t want him. You have paid x amount for him; he’s on a seven-year contract. How do we get rid of him? There’s no way. He might end up on loan for three years.”

This season, we need to be careful with our young players and avoid placing unrealistic expectations on them to perform well in every game. Additionally, what Adam has said may or may not be accurate, depending solely on Pochettino’s judgement.

However, Mudryk is a valuable player who ought to be playing for us next season rather than being leased out somewhere else. He joined the team in January, and three managers have since taken over.

He has undoubtedly had trouble adjusting to their managerial styles, and on top of that, he hasn’t played as much as he should have. But we are optimistic that Pochettino will help the 22-year-old in terms of his development.
