Chelsea are interested in a summer deal for Inter Milan star Andre Onana
According to The Telegraph (Subscription Required), English Premier League giants Chelsea are interested in securing the signing of Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Despite two extravagant transfer windows, the Blues have in fact got worse. A revamp is on the cards next summer and the goalkeeping roster is one that will receive special attention.
Chelsea are ready to part ways with Edouard Mendy after the veteran failed to agree on a contract extension. The most expensive shot-stopper in history, Kepa Arrizabalaga has enjoyed a resurgence of late but is in line to leave in the summer should a suitable offer arrive.
As the last line of defence, a goalkeeper is a club’s final hope of keeping the opposition attack at bay. Chelsea have struggled to develop a reliable number one and the deficiency is well-known both to fans and rivals.
With Mauricio Pochettino inching towards the Blues’ managerial hot seat, the Blues are seeking to jump ahead of their rivals in the race to land Andre Onana. The Nigerian is a proven talent at the top level and displaced Samir Handanovic from the starting XI upon moving to the Giuseppe Meazza.
The 27-year-old is likely to set Chelsea back £40 million, a fair price should he go on to make a difference for us on the field. The shot-stopper’s wages should also not present much of an issue should negotiations reach a happy end.
Pochettino appears to be on board regarding a move for Onana and the Nigerian is likely to become the club’s new number one should he make the move. A strong defence lays the foundations for a winning side and bringing in Onana certainly addresses some key deficiencies at the back for the Blues.
Onana is an excellent shot-stopper and is a formidable challenger in one-v-one opportunities. His arrival will give Chelsea one less position to be worried about.
