Rio Ferdinand says Chelsea have a ‘problem’ of scoring goals, visible in 2-0 loss vs Real Madrid

Rio Ferdinand, a former Manchester United superstar, has stressed that Chelsea’s inability to capitalise on opportunities in front of the goal is the primary cause of the team’s failure to win games.

Additionally, the Blues had yet another difficult night scoring during their quarterfinal Champions League match against Real Madrid, as the Spanish side routed the Blues 2-0 with ease at the Santiago Bernabeu

They had a few chances to score goals but failed to take advantage of them, showing a lack of clinical flair and the potential requirement for a striker. Joao Felix in particular had a golden chance in the first half but true to his form, he failed to score.

This is their worst scoring drought since 1993, as they have gone four games without scoring. Additionally, they have lost their last four games across all competitions, which sums up the pandemonium they are now experiencing.

Ferdinand, (h/t Mirror), who was speaking to BT Sport, provided an explanation for the Blues’ losing streak.

“The problem is finding goals. You see today, chance comes their way, and they don’t manage to finish it. The problem is that Frank is also trying to work out the right players to play. Mudryk there, big signing, is he the right one?”

This has been a significant issue for Chelsea, as none of the players has demonstrated their ability to score goals, and when the chances have arrived they spurned them. If Felix and Raheem Sterling had taken advantage of their chances, the Blues may have scored two goals.

Given that Bernabeu’s pitch is wide and Mykhaylo Mudryk excels in broad areas, he should have been given an opportunity and he might have used his agility to make runs in behind to lead the attack. But then again, fans would have criticised Lampard had the Ukraine international played and failed to score, as he has since coming here from Shakhtar Donetsk.

The team put on a really terrible performance and lacked any determination to prevail in this game. Now that it seems like our season is virtually over, it will take something more if we want to mount a comeback in second-leg.

More Chelsea News:

The summer transfer window will be decisive. First and foremost we will have to take a call on loanee Romelu Lukaku’s long-term future. Then, of course, after appointing a new manager, decide if Armando Broja is good enough to lead our line on a regular basis. Most importantly, we have to search for a new striker and try to decide what to do with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
