Chelsea face battle to keep Anthony Barry after Bayern Munich hiring Thomas Tuchel
Chelsea will have the battle to keep highly sought-after coach Anthony Barry after seeing Thomas Tuchel return to management as a Bayern Munich head coach.
Moments after sacking Julian Nagelsmann, Bayern had the replacement ready in the shape of the former Chelsea boss Tuchel. It felt like an appointment that brewed for a few weeks and only got public once both parties agreed on a deal.
It is anticipated that Zsolt Low and Arno Michels, who worked with Tuchel when he was at Stamford Bridge, will join the German at Bayern.
The former Paris-Saint Germain and Borussia Dortmund boss rates Barry very highly, having worked with the Englishman during his tenure in west London. He would want to work with him again in Munich.
Barry is still an employee at Chelsea, currently working with Graham Potter. He has taken a part-time coaching role with the Portuguese national team as well.
The 36-year-old was originally brought to the club by Frank Lampard in 2019 from Wigan Athletic. It remains to be seen whether he would want to switch clubs now.
His decision may also depend on what Potter wants. If the Chelsea boss wants Barry in his coaching team, the club should do everything to help him with that. If the boss is fine with the latter leaving, then we can wait for a formal approach by Tuchel and he is gone.
In either case, let’s hope that this does not happen now as it would disrupt the work done by the coach ahead of the crucial final part of this season. If an offer comes in the summer, then it is worthwhile discussing and letting go of.
