Emmanuel Petit tells Chelsea to sign Victor Osimhen amidst Didier Drogba comparisons
Speaking to Premier League Odds (h/t Football.London), Emmanuel Petit has urged Chelsea to sign star Napoli striker Victor Osimhen who reminds him of Didier Drogba.
In the last few weeks, there have been reports suggesting that Chelsea are one of the clubs interested in signing Osimhen in the summer window. Napoli may demand a fee of over £100m though, while the Serie A club’s president has made it clear that they are under no stress to sell their key assets.
The Nigeria international recently talked about his future in an interview and did not close the door for a potential exit after the end of this season.
Here’s what Petit said when urging Chelsea to sign the 24-year-old (h/t Football.London):
“If I was Chelsea, I would go for Osimhen over the likes of Marcus Thuram.
“You know there is a striker’s curse at Chelsea but someday this will be broken and he could do it. I have followed Osimhen since he played for Lille and he was already a very good striker.
“Since he left for Italy, where the pressure is very high and the fans are passionate, he’s played brilliantly. They have so much pace in their game and he is physical, clinical and very confident about his quality.
“If Chelsea can bring in Osimhen, that’d be very good for them. He reminds me of Drogba somewhat. He certainly possesses the same qualities as him.”
It is a big compliment for a player when he gets compared to a striker as legendary as Drogba. Petit is not wrong though. Osimhen has the characteristics to match the Ivorian superstar.
The former Lille striker is probably the best in the European circuit this season. He has scored 21 goals and assisted four in 25 appearances in all competitions. He is one of the main reasons why Napoli are running with the Serie A and are one of the hot favourites to win the Champions League.
Despite all the heavy spending in the last two transfer windows, Chelsea failed to sign a top striker of the current age profile. They either have a 33-year-old Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang or a 20-year-old David Datro Fofana. The former looks past his best and the latter will take time before coming good.

So, it is clear that the majority of the spending in the summer needs to be done to sign a top-class striker who is at the peak of his game. Osimhen comes to mind when talking about those attributes. Let’s make that happen before anyone else does.
