Chelsea are in the race to sign Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge
According to ChelseaFC365 (h/t Football.London), Chelsea have scouted Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge over the past couple of months and could make a late move in January.
Premier League rivals Liverpool are also considering making a move for the Norway international before the deadline day. But, the Blues may have stolen a march on this.
Berge is currently playing with Sheffield United in the Championship. The 24-year-old was with the Blades in the two seasons they were in the Premier League from 2019 to 2021.
The former Genk midfielder played 29 top-flight games in those two seasons, scoring and assisting two goals each. This season, he has made 21 appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals and assisting three.
Berge is a central midfielder by trade who can operate in a double-pivot defensive midfield as well. He is an excellent passer of the ball, works well in the transition game and has a goal threat in him.
Though he may not be of the level of the other midfielders linked with Chelsea, be it, Moises Caicedo or Enzo Fernandez, the Norwegian is a tidy player who can do a job if the Blues need someone like that now.
We will wait and see if there is any substance in us being linked with the 24-year-old. Profile-wise, he is a player who could suit our midfield game. In terms of finances, he would cost way less than the two names we mentioned above.

If this move does happen, it will be a no-risk transfer. It is not as if Chelsea would pay over the odds to sign a Championship midfielder. So, irrespective of whether he would be a success here or not, there won’t be any financial loss on the cards.
