Chelsea can still sign Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez in January
According to Ben Jacobs of CBS Sports (h/t Standard Sport), Chelsea still have a chance to sign Benfica and Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez before the deadline of the January transfer window.
They are tipped to make this deal happen if a ‘take it or leave it’ offer is put on the table. Benfica are adamant that a release clause of £106m must be paid. Chelsea do not value him that highly.
It is revealed that the clause would not be paid by anyone even if he stays with the Portuguese side till the summer. We know the 21-year-old wants to play for Chelsea.
Combining these factors could soften Benfica’s stance towards the asking price and may agree to sell Fernandez for a fee the Blues are offering before the deadline day.
It remains to be seen whether we would go back for the 2022 World Cup winner in the next few days. The need for a midfielder is there to have an improved chance of having a great second half of this campaign.
The former River Plate midfielder has a lot of good qualities that can improve Chelsea’s midfield. He can play as a holding midfielder and be that lynchpin between defence and attack or operate as a number eight in a box-to-box role.
With what we have seen of Fernandez so far this season in the club and international football, the ceiling of his game is high. Therefore, even a higher fee paid now would be recuperated with the performances he can deliver consistently.
