Emmanuel Petit opens up on the Chelsea striker curse
Speaking to Sporting Post (h/t Metro), former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder Emmanuel Petit talked about how Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang would regret leaving the Gunners and touched on the Chelsea striker curse.
The Gabon international arrived at Stamford Bridge on the deadline day of the previous summer window from Barcelona. With what he has shown so far, it is nothing compared to what he did in Spain for half a season and how big were his contributions during his time at Arsenal.
The 33-year-old has scored three goals in 17 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea. A lot of appearances have either come as a substitute or him starting and getting hooked off early.
Here’s what Petit said about why Aubameyang would now be regretting not playing for Arsenal (h/t Metro):
“I think he lost his passion and I think after his spell at Barcelona he can see what Arsenal are doing without him. What Jesus and Nketiah are doing.
“Maybe he is thinking if he had the right attitude he could be part of what is going on there.”
As much as this can be agreed upon, it is well-known that the 33-year-old did not have a good relationship with the Gunners boss Mikel Arteta during the latter stages of his stay there. So, it made sense to part ways, irrespective of what the future of Arsenal would look like.
Petit went on and touched about the striker curse at Chelsea, which has turned out to be a real issue here (h/t Metro):
“Now with Chelsea, maybe there is a “curse” with the striker, but Didier Drogba wasn’t cursed – the whole team is not working, there is something wrong at the moment.”
If we look at Chelsea over the past 15-20 years, only Didier Drogba and Diego Costa have been the strikers who have managed to score 20+ league goals per season on multiple occasions. The Blues have signed so many other top number nines in this period, but none of them has flourished here.
The likes of Fernando Torres, Gonzalo Higuain, Alvaro Morata, and Romelu Lukaku, these players have had excellent goal-scoring records elsewhere except in Chelsea colours.

Add Aubameyang to that list now because he is struggling here big time. Granted that the team is also not flowering any plants, but the 33-year-old has looked out of place from his first appearance itself. It would be better if we part ways in the summer.
