Chelsea step up efforts to tie down Liverpool target to new contract

Chelsea start formal contract renewal negotiations with Mason Mount.

Chelsea to step up their efforts to tie the future of Mason Mount amid Liverpool interest

According to the Guardian, Chelsea have stepped up their efforts to make Mason Mount sign a contract extension amid serious interest from Liverpool.

Mount, whose contract expires in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt), wants his new wages to reflect his status in the team. He is currently earning £75,000-per-week, which is at par with one of the lowest earners at the club.

Chelsea are contemplating whether to increase the offer to sign Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo after an initial offer of £55m was rejected.

With this uncertainty around, there is a possibility that Mount may not sign the extension and leave. Liverpool are exploring the move to sign the England international in the summer. Juventus have also shown interest.

Amidst that interest from the Reds, Chelsea are ready to be as generous as possible with their contract offer for Mount. They do not want him to go in the summer, especially not any direct rival in the Premier League.

It is an interesting dynamic to look at. Amidst all of this, what if the interest from either Liverpool or Juventus attracts the player into making a move, irrespective of the contract offer?

Chelsea need to be quicker with their contract offer for Mount.

For that reason, Chelsea needs to start the negotiations soon and be as generous as possible. Mount is one of the important players in the squad who has the potential to be a future captain.

The 24-year-old is the type of player around whom this new team can be built by Graham Potter. So, letting him go makes no sense from any viewpoint.

Let’s hope this situation doesn’t turn into a saga. Because if it does, it would favour the chasing teams and they can make use of the uncertainty to take the player away.
