Transfer News: Chelsea target Josko Gvardiol flirts with idea of a Real Madrid transfer

RB Leipzig and Croatian international defender Josko Gvardiol has flirted with the idea of a Real Madrid transfer. The 20-year-old has been linked with a move to Chelsea in recent times.

Graham Potter is looking to add further options to his defence this January. Recent injury to Wesley Fofana and with Kalidou Koulibaly struggling to find form, the need for a new defender has become visible.

The Blues have been interested in the Croat for some time now, but it seems the defender has the desire to play elsewhere. When asked whether he would like to play for Los Blancos someday, this is what the defender had to say (h/t Football. London):

“Real Madrid is the biggest club in the world, so who knows… maybe one day I can play there. I would like to, yes. Real Madrid, there’s no need. I already know everything. I know it’s the biggest club in the world and how important it is to be linked to such a team.”

Gvardiol has been simply phenomenal for both club and country this season. His performances in this year’s World Cup has caught the eyes of almost all top European clubs including the west London club.

Potter can do with a defender like him. Thiago Silva is now 38 and as such, we need to have a succession plan for him. While the Brazilian has arguably been our best defender this season, he will not be here forever.

The 20-year-old has shown his capability on the highest stage in the game and that too at such a young age. He makes a somewhat perfect defender to go for to replace the veteran and have someone lead the line for a long time to come.

However, his recent comments would not fill Spurs fans with a lot of confidence. Real are arguably one of the best teams in the world and a lot of players dream of donning that famous white shirt. The Blues should take this as a wake-up call and up their interest in the centre-back.

More Chelsea News:

It remains to be seen if Los Blancos enter the market for the defender next month. Should they do that, they will prove to be tough competition for the Blues considering their financial and cultural clout.
