Transfer News: Lionel Messi could move to the MLS next summer amid interest from Chelsea
Paris Saint-Germain and Argentina forward Lionel Messi could be on his way to the MLS next summer after his current contract with the Parisian club expires in 2023. Chelsea have been linked with a move for the 35-year-old.
According to The Times (subscription required) [h/t Football. London], Inter Miami are close to agreeing to a deal with the Argentine that would see him become the highest-paid player in the history of MLS.
Messi shocked the footballing world when he moved to PSG in the summer of 2021 from his boyhood club Barcelona. Roman Abramovich, who was the then-owner of the club tried signing the forward but failed.
The Blues seem to have continued their interest in the seven-time Ballon D’or winner, but could again miss out on signing the former Barcelona legend. Messi has been in terrific form this season.
Despite being 35, the Argentina international has 12 goals and 14 assists for the Parisian club in 19 appearances in all competitions this season. He was also the star for his country as his goal and assist helped Argentina beat Mexico 2-0 and keep their World Cup hope alive.
But will he make a good transfer for Chelsea? No doubt the player is arguably one of the best players ever to grace the game, but the Blues will have to factor in his age and whether he can keep the same level of fitness.
The player is not getting any younger and age will catch up with him. He is human after all. Also, his wages will likely not be low, that money which otherwise could be utilised in bringing a young and talented midfielder or attacker.

Overall it would not make much sense for the club to make a move for him. But getting one of the world’s best on a free transfer could entice the west London club. It remains to be seen if they make any approach for the player next summer.
