Chelsea star Mason Mount set to undergo a thigh scan ahead of Aston Villa clash
According to the Athletic (subscription required), Chelsea star midfielder Mason Mount is set to undergo a scan on a thigh issue ahead of the Aston Villa clash on Sunday but is expected to be fit for the game against Steven Gerard’s men.
The scan is said to be a mere precautionary measure and nothing serious. Mount, who has started all five of Graham Potter’s games at Chelsea until now had to be substituted at halftime against AC Milan in the Champions League midweek despite being the best player on the pitch in the first half.
The talented English midfielder also missed the training session yesterday but his injury is not expected to be anything serious. Chelsea will be hoping that indeed is the case considering how fundamental Mount is to everything good that the Blues do.
Gareth Southgate will also be fretting over the fitness of a player who is a regular in his plans for the national team and they will be hoping that the scan results come out positive ahead of the Aston Villa clash. The Blues must not risk Mount for the game on Sunday even if there is a slight chance of aggravating his injury.
It is not like the Blues don’t have options who can fill in for Mason Mount. If a break is what the talented 23-year-old needs, then we must give it to him on Sunday. However, there is optimism that the English international will be fit for the clash.
Chelsea have had quite a few injuries in recent weeks. Wesley Fofana injured himself in the first meeting between the Blues and AC Milan and is expected to be out until after the World Cup. N’ Golo Kante has suffered a relapse and is expected to miss the World Cup in Qatar.
The big one though is that of Reece James. The English international, who is the starting right wing-back for club and country is set to meet with a specialist this week after getting injured in the midweek clash against Stefano Pioli’s side and England will be hoping that James is okay.
The last thing that the Blues or England want at the moment is a setback for Mason Mount and it remains to be seen what happens with this situation. After a poor start to the season by his own lofty standards, the 23-year-old has returned to his absolute best under Graham Potter.

Mason Mount is an incredible talent who deserves to be in Qatar. If he misses out, it will be a shame, not only for Chelsea but also football as a whole. The Blues must be careful with him and play him only when he is absolutely fit. It remains to be seen what Graham Potter does.
