Injury News: Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana poised to miss about a month with knee issue
In what will come as good news to the Chelsea fans and management, Wesley Fofana’s injury is not that serious. This is according to a report in the Guardian.
A scan has shown that the 21-year-old did not sustain a serious ligament tear and is now likely to be out for about four weeks. Fofana picked up what looked like a serious ligament tear during his side’s 3-0 win over AC Milan on Wednesday.
The centre-back had to come off in the 38th minute not long after giving his side the lead. Trevoh Chalobah took to the field in his place and had a decent outing. The Englishman could be the defender that steps in during Fofana’s absence.
The best-case scenario for the centre-back is that he returns to action next month. Although, this injury could put in jeopardy any hopes the defender had to make it to the French national squad for the World Cup next month.
He is set to miss a lot of games in the meantime with this month packed with fixtures both in the league and Europe. The former Leicester City man will miss the game against Wolverhampton Wanderers this Saturday and also the return fixture in Milan next Tuesday.
Fofana could also miss all the games against Aston Villa, Brentford, Manchester United and Brighton & Hove Albion before the end of this month. The centre-back could also miss the Champions League game against RB Salzburg on 24 October.
Graham Potter has options at the back to replace the 21-year-old. Trevoh Chalobah, who came on for him against Milan was very good at the back. Marc Cucurella is another option who is capable of playing in the back three, while Cesar Azpilicueta is also another option on the bench.
