Gus Poyet believes Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will be important for Chelsea this season.

Transfer News: Chelsea and Barcelona in contact over Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Marcos Alonso deals

Chelsea and Barcelona are in contact over deciding the futures of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Marcos Alonso this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Blues want to sign the Gabon international but seem to have hit a hurdle. Thomas Tuchel’s side wants to offer Marcos Alonso as a makeweight for the former Arsenal striker.

However, Barca want any deal for the Spanish left-back to be separate. Chelsea seem to be in a situation where they don’t have a lot of bargaining power.

We are the ones that need Aubameyang to fill a well-known gap in our attack. And if Chelsea fail to offload Alonso this summer, then they will go into the new season with three first-team left-backs.

Chelsea must hurry

Marc Cucurella’s arrival from Brighton and Hove Albion clearly shows that he will battle with Ben Chilwell for a starting position, not Alonso. The 31-year-old marauding left-wing-back could be of use to Barca, however.

They only have Jordi Alba to play down that flank. Hence, both teams have something to gain in such a deal, given Aubameyang has also fallen down the pecking order after Robert Lewandowski’s arrival from Bayern Munich.

Marcos Alonso struggled for game-time in 2020/21
Marcos Alonso struggled for regular starts in the past two seasons.

Chelsea would be wise to wrap this deal up as soon as possible. There aren’t a lot of days left before the transfer window deadline arrives on September 1.

Auba and Alonso have the chance to increase their chances of playing time if they swap clubs. It remains to be seen if the two clubs can iron out their differences and go ahead with the two deals in question.
