Raheem Sterling opens up on leaving Manchester City for Chelsea
England International and new Chelsea recruit Raheem Sterling has opened up on his move from Manchester City this summer and explains the reasons behind making the move.
Speaking to Chelsea correspondent Adam Newson (h/t Football London), Sterling agrees that winning major honours such as the Champions League was one of the biggest factors behind his decision to join the Blues.
Chelsea have been one of the most dominant teams in the Champions League, winning it on two separate occasions in the past decade and always looks like a strong contender for the title. The same cannot be said for Man City who have fallen short on numerous occasions.
Speaking on the matter, Sterling is aware that now he is in the midst of European royalty. He remains keen on adding to the club’s tally while also breaking his duck on the continental stage.
“I haven’t played Champions League football with Chelsea yet. They have obviously won it. I haven’t. They have got bragging rights. But again, I am here to try to win it.”
This shows a clear image of the project that Sterling wants to be a part of, after having faced numerous unsuccessful attempts to win the European competition with his previous team.
The Englishman is at the peak of his career and the move made sense for all parties involved. Chelsea were in dire need of an experienced attacking player who can take up the responsibility at the front end which they have been missing for the past few seasons.
For the 27-year-old, the transfer allows him to be a central figure in a club which is going through its own fresh start and be an integral part of the lineup. It was something that was not guaranteed to him at Manchester City.
Raheem Sterling has definitely made Chelsea stronger on paper and certainly, there are a lot of expectations of him from the Blues faithful.
