Romano: Chelsea will insert buy-back clause in defender’s contract if he joins PL rivals

Manchester City and Liverpool are eyeing Chelsea defender Levi Colwill.

Transfer News: Chelsea to insert buy-back clause in Brighton’s deal for Levi Colwill

Chelsea are said to insert a buyback clause for Levi Colwill in the deal with Brighton & Hove Albion. This is according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano via Twitter.

Colwill is said to be on his way out from Stamford Bridge this summer, with Brighton being the destination. The 19-year-old centre-back is one of the most promising talents in English football.

Romano claims that all camps are now working on the final details for the transfer of the player. Chelsea were adamant to have a buy-back clause inserted and they are looking likely to get it.

A Chelsea academy product, the 19-year-old spent the last season on loan at Championship side Huddersfield Town. There he showed his potential as he emerged as one of the best talents in England. A left-footed centre-back, he is also capable of playing as a left-back.

The 19-year-old was a key player for Huddersfield as they reached the finals of the Championship play-offs last season. They lost out promotion to Nottingham Forest, but Colwill had showed his talent. The England Under-21 international made a total of 32 appearances in all competitions for The Terriers last season.

With Thomas Tuchel having to fix his backline this summer, it is really surprising that he is willing to let such a talent leave. But having included a buy back clause, it would indicate that Colwill may have a future at Stamford Bridge after all. The amount has not been revealed, but one will hope that it is something economical.

Brighton are an exciting club and Colwill will only improve there. The most important part of all this will be that the player will get to play Premier League football. This will benefit both Colwill and Chelsea. A buy-back clause allows the club to monitor the performance of the player and buy him back when they see him fit to start for the Blues.

It could be argued that a loan deal would have been better. Considering how the Blues have been targeting young players in the market, Tuchel must have a plan for letting Colwill go. At least that’s what one will hope.

With the new season starting this weekend, it won’t be surprising to see Colwill put on excellent performances on a weekly basis. If that turns out to be the case, Blues fans will then have a reason to be excited because of the special clause that could see him return to the Bridge in the future.
