Edinson Cavani’s transfer to Atletico Madrid breaks down
In a boost for Chelsea, Edinson Cavani’s transfer to Atletico Madrid has broken down. According to L’Equipe (h/t Metro), the Uruguayan star will remain at Paris Saint Germain for the remainder of the season.
Cavani had his heart set on a move to the Spanish capital but the talks broke down with just hours remaining in the January transfer window (h/t Metro).
A free agent in the summer, the striker had also commanded interest from Premiership duo Chelsea and Manchester United.
According to AS (h/t Metro), the talks broke down after the player’s agent forced Atletico to pull out.
The Spanish giants have signed Yannick Carrasco on a season-long loan from the Chinese side Dalian Yifang. The short-term nature of the deal could suggest that that Atletico will return in the summer for Cavani.
It has been a disappointing window for the Blues. With no new signings coming in Frank Lampard will have to rely on the same squad that has blown hot and cold throughout the season.
Add to it the presence of the disgruntled Oliver Giroud, Lampard will have to be at his managerial best to coax the best out of his young squad for a final push.
There was much anticipation among the Chelsea faithful after the club’s transfer ban was revoked. A striker was considered to be a priority for Lampard but the club have failed to land any of their targets this window.
Attempts to sign Moussa Dembele, Dries Mertens and Boubakary Soumare have all failed with Chelsea being unable to bring anyone in.
