The Chelsea youth product has made three appearances for the first-team this season. The youngster’s contract was set to expire in the summer but the 19-year-old’s decision to join Brighton instead has come as a shock for Lampard.
Lampard has shown a willingness to put faith in youth this season. His decision to bring on Lamptey as Chelsea trailed 1-0 against Arsenal shows the confidence he had in the youngster.
Lamptey has also played two of Chelsea’s FA Cup games this season. According to Goal (h/t Metro), Lamptey has informed Chelsea that he will not be signing an extension, prompting the Blues to accept an offer from Brighton.
Chelsea will now reluctantly have to sell the player in January rather than losing him for free in the summer. The Blues already have an exciting prospect at right-back in Reece James.
